Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is a classically-based martial art that focuses, on one level, on the development of practical defensive and offensive combative skills and, on a higher level, on the development of inner power, focus, self discipline, harmony, perseverance and self actualization in the physical, psychological and spiritual domains. As such, the art is a path to the achievement of higher level physical and psychological goals.

Wa Shin Ryu is not a sport in the conventional sense and our training is not about playing for points or competing for medals or trophies.  This is a combat art and the techniques we teach are dangerous. They are in fact illegal in competition! Therefore, students will be expected (and will be taught) to exercise considerable self control in their application, and their primary consideration in practice will be the welfare of their partner. Finally, the course is not about teaching you to be violent.  On the contrary, by appreciating the devastating power you will develop you will have the confidence to walk away from a confrontation with confidence (if that is deemed the appropriate response at the time), knowing  full well that you have nothing to prove.

The primary and immediate purpose of this course is to refine and extend practical self defense skills  and to develop a state of mind which permits their successful application in dangerous situations. Long term goals for those who choose to pursue the study of Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu include the development of advanced combat skills, mind-body harmony, empowerment, heightened levels of awareness, inner peace and superior quality of movement. As they progress, students begin to immerse themselves in more classical forms of training and the emphasis shifts from defense to advanced forms of unarmed combat and the philosophy, traditions and strategies that guide and inform such advanced forms of training. In fact, at this level the art becomes a Way of Life and the student is ready to embark on a path that focuses on the achievement of higher goals in the physical, psychological and spiritual domains (e.g., development of Ki Power, among others).
